Book your assessment towards the end of the first school term in Grade R to gain insight into which developmental skills have already been mastered, and which still need support. APTITUDE TESTS FOR SCHOOL BEGINNERS (ASB)
The ASB is a cognitive screening assessment used to evaluate a child’s readiness for formal schooling. It measures specific aptitudes and abilities that are important for success in the early years of foundation phase education.
The assessment helps determine whether a child is developmentally ready to begin Grade 1, and can highlight areas where the learner may be struggling to meet the expected requirements for their age group. The results provide valuable insight for teachers when developing an appropriate Learner Support Plan, and offer practical recommendations to parents on how to support their child’s development in the identified areas.
The ASB assesses eight key developmental areas:
- Perception
- Spatial ability
- Reasoning
- Numerical ability
- Gestalt (the ability to see the whole picture)
- Coordination
- Memory
- Verbal comprehension
Book your assessment for November to gain insight into which developmental skills have already been mastered, and which still need support. The assessment can also be conducted with learners who are already in Grade 1. In this case, it helps identify specific areas where additional support may be needed to enable the learner to better cope with the academic demands of formal schooling.

What is Primitive Reflex Retention?
Primitive reflexes help to wire your child’s nervous system from conception to approximately six months after birth. After this stage, they should become dormant, allowing the learning brain to take over.
